May 8, 2023 Regular Board Meeting

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. French recognized Caldwell and Canyon Springs High School students who participated in the Close Up Washington D.C. trip earlier this year. Students toured National monuments, learned about Congress, and even met and talked with Idaho State Senators and Representatives. 


Mr. Langan, Government Teacher at Caldwell High School, spoke to Trustees about the YMCA Youth In Government Program. Caldwell sent five delegates and one lawyer team to the state conference. Alan Mendoza, Valeria Rodriguez, Camille Garza, Ali Garcia, and Valeria Rosas acted as representatives and senators in the Youth Legislature. Bhavya Agarwal and Aiden Hall were on the Supreme Court team that won their case in the Youth Supreme Court. 


Paul Victoriano, Student Representative from Caldwell High School, provided Trustees with an update of events at CHS in the last month.

PATRON INPUT

  • Nicole Tackle provided input on the Preschool Plan for 2023-2024 and the District Budget. 

 

REGULAR AGENDA

  • VFW Recognition of Kelly Garey and Van Buren Elementary School - Dr. French recognized Kelly Garey, 4th grade teacher at Van Buren, for winning the 2023 Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award at the elementary school level. A representative from the VFW introduced and presented her with the award. Dr. French also applauded the Van Buren PTO for being awarded the IEA’s Friend of Education Award recipient.
  • Caldwell Youth Forum - Ron Bonneau provided Trustees with information about the Caldwell Youth Forum. Mr. Bonneau plans to advance the Caldwell Youth Forum experience to include an overnight camp stay in McCall, ID on September 7-8, 2023. Trustees voted to approve and allow 10 students and staff from both Caldwell and Canyon Springs High School to attend this event during scheduled school hours.
  • JMS Anti-Bullying Video - Karen Cameron, Jefferson Middle School Principal, and students from student council provided Trustees with an update on their anti-bullying campaign video. Students shared with Trustees how the video was filmed and produced. 
  • Master Agreement 2023-2024 - Trustees voted to approve the 2023-2024 Master Agreement.
  • Caldwell Online Academy (COA) - Kathy Neufeld, COA Teacher, provided Trustees with information about COA. Ms. Neufeld has been teaching students online for the last three years. The Board voted to discontinue Caldwell Online Academy. 
  • Preschool Plan for 2023-2024 - Tamara Lawson, Director of Federal Programs, and Chynna Hirasaki, Special Services Director, provided Trustees with information on the 2023-2024 preschool plan. Ms. Lawson shared with Trustees how the District is planning to move and consolidate preschool classes to one location. This would allow staff the ability to work as a team to meet the needs of all students . 
  • My Perspectives resource for 6th grade - Melissa Langan, Chief Academic Officer, provided Trustees with an overview of the My Perspectives resource for 6th grade curriculum. The Board voted to accept the My Perspectives resource for 6th grade proposal. 
  • Proposed calendar 2024-2025 - Melissa Langan, Chief Academic Officer, provided Trustees with an update on the 2024-2025 proposed calendar. Ms. Langan will share the proposed calendar option at the May 15th Special Board Meeting.
  • May 24, 2023 - Members of the Board voted to approve and accept the corrected early release for Wednesday, May 24, 2023. Elementary will be released at 1:00 pm and secondary will be released at 12:00 pm.
  • School Board Summer Retreat - Trustees will meet on Monday, July 24th, for the 2023 School Board Summer Retreat. 
  • Future Agenda Items - Trustees did not discuss any future agenda items.
