Difficult or Traumatic Experiences for Children and How to Reduce their Impact on Learning
Repeated studies show that difficult or traumatic childhood experiences can impact learning and development in children. These difficult experiences may include exposure to physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, household dysfunction (conflict, instability, moving frequently, or homelessness), loss of a family member (death, divorce, incarceration, separation), living with others struggling with mental illness, etc. All of us experience some difficult or traumatic experiences. How do these impact development and learning if we are exposed to too many as children?
In this presentation, our guest speaker will discuss the impact of these experiences and what parents and caregivers can do to minimize or counteract their effects on learning and development.
