STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION - CERTIFICATION INFORMATION

CERTIFICATION DOCUMENTATION
Each certificated employee is personally responsible for maintaining and renewing his/her teaching certificate and endorsements (Board Policy 440). To remain valid, an educator must renew Idaho teaching credentials every five (5) years. A valid certificate must be on file with the Human Resources Department each year by September 1st.

Curious about your certificate expiration? This link allows you to look up your certification expiration date, endorsement(s), assignment(s) you can teach, and the status of your certification application.

If you are unsure of your renewal requirements or you hold an Interim certificate, please see the bottom of your certificate or call or email the State Department of Education, Teacher Certification at:
  • State Department of Education - Certification Main Line
  • (208) 332-6882
  • [email protected]

If you have lost your certificate and need a duplicate. Please order a duplicate through the State Department of Education, Duplicate Certificate order process.
If you hold a 5-year certificate and your certificate expires in August 2023, you may go to this link starting January 2023 to renew your certificate. There is an online option for renewal with an additional small credit card processing fee. With the online option, you will need to send a copy of your transcripts (does not need to be official) to [email protected] after you submit your application. I recommend referencing your online application in the email.

The Idaho Comprehensive Literacy requirement can be fulfilled by completing and passing an in-person or online course, or by successful completion of the Idaho Comprehensive Literacy Assessment. Please visit the English Language Arts/Literacy page for additional information on course providers.

Mathematical Thinking for Instruction/Teaching Mathematical Thinking

The Mathematical Thinking for Instruction (MTI)/Teaching Mathematical Thinking (TMT) is a three-credit course that gives Idaho teachers and administrators the best practices and teaching strategies they need to help all students succeed in math. Please visit the Mathematics page.

  • All administrators in Idaho are required to complete a three (3) credit course in the Idaho framework for teachers' evaluation during the five (5) year validity period of the credential being renewed. IMPORTANT: The teachers' evaluation course is only required if you have held the administrator certificate for the full five years of the credential period.
  • Transcripts with the course listed should be included with the packet
  • For more information including a list of approved courses, see the Idaho State Board of Education’s Administrative Certificate Renewal Requirement webpage or call the Office of the State Board of Education's Educator Effectiveness Program Manager at (208) 332-1593.

  • All Pupil Service Staff in Idaho are required to complete six credits for renewal (see PD above) or provide a current occupational license issued by the appropriate Idaho state licensing board

The Professional and Advanced Professional Endorsements are funding mechanisms which allow for the following:

  • movement onto the Professional or Advanced Professional rung of the career ladder
  • the inclusion of education allocations in district/charter funding calculations, provided the appropriate education is also reported
  • recommendation for the issuance of a renewable contract after three (3) years in the district/charter

The Professional and Advanced Professional Endorsements are not like certification endorsements, and they are neither derived from nor included on an individual’s certificate.
