Beliefs and Principles that guide our work
Van Buren is committed to developing each student's capacity to think, reason, and use one's mind well, and to ensure that each student develops the understandings, skills, and habits that make it possible to participate fully in the life of a complex, diverse community.
Respect:
We believe learning occurs best in an environment of mutual respect where it is safe to take risks, explore new possibilities, and collaborate with one another. We hold high expectations for ourselves and for our students, and trust each person to contribute their very best to this learning community. Ethnic and cultural diversity strengthens our community and provides an invaluable resource to the learning of each member of the community.
Responsibility:
We believe that all students can and will learn if presented with the right opportunities to do so. It is our responsibility to ensure that each day each child experiences success in moving toward the standards that identify what students should know and be able to do and toward the balance needed to become a lifelong learner.
Learning:
We believe each of us has unique skills and talents to be identified and nurtured as we become self-directed, creative thinkers and problem solvers. We are committed to the continuous learning of all of the members of our school community which includes questioning past practices, taking risks, and creating new possibilities that better meet the needs of each of our students, our staff, and our community.
Basic Needs:
We believe students must have their physical, emotional, and intellectual needs met in order to learn. To develop skills for self-determination and self-sufficiency, students must have a firm grasp of content knowledge and the ability to apply that knowledge to current and new experiences. They must maintain an attitude of determination - a steadfast commitment, patience, and optimism that persists even in the face of adversity.
Accountability:
We believe in the accountability of action. We are accountable to continuously monitor our actions to ensure integrity between our words and our behaviors. Continuous monitoring includes a thorough analysis of required state and district assessments of students' academic progress, identification of what is working so that it can be expanded and what is not working so it can be eliminated, and a commitment to continuously improve our classroom and our school practices.
Celebration:
We believe learning is an exciting adventure to be enjoyed and celebrated. We celebrate our progress, our accomplishments, and our failures that help us find a better way. We celebrate our whole school community where we draw the strength and support for continuing to grow and learn. We celebrate our ability to make a difference in the world and to make a contribution to others in our community. We celebrate the power of laughter and joy and the balance it provides in our sometimes difficult, always challenging work. |
