- Middle provides an opportunity for children to transition through adolescence to young adulthood in the academic setting.

Attain social competency.
Develop a sense of purpose, of a bright future.
Learn to solve problems independently.
- What a developmentally responsive middle school is/has:
Staff committed to the adolescent.
Guided by a vision.
High expectations.
An adult advocate for every student.
Staff that builds partnerships with families and the community at large.
A positive school climate.
- What a developmentally responsive middle school does:
Provides a curriculum that is challenging, rigorous, integrative, and exploratory.
Pedagogical approaches are designed to engage all learners.
Assessment and evaluation supports learning goals.
Provides a flexible organizational structure.
Provides comprehensive guidance and support services.
In a sense a middle school can be seen in an academic/intellectual context as a bridge from childhood to young adulthood, spanning adolescence. Another comparison would be an academic stair case from one developmental level (childhood) to another (young adulthood) through yet another (adolescence).
