Gifted and Talented

Identification Procedures for Elementary:

Formal academic and intellectual identification occurs during the second semester of the academic year in 2nd grade, although some students are formally identified later, through formal and informal measures.  Students must qualify only once and will maintain their gifted and talented (GT) status throughout their elementary and secondary years, unless parents request their child be removed from the program.

Gifted and Talented/Advanced Learning Program (ALP)

  • Referrals: Students may be referred by a teacher, parent, student (themselves or a peer), administrator, community member, or GT Coordinator
  • Teacher Academic and Ability Rating Scales are completed for indications of academic giftedness in math, language arts, and general gifted characteristics.
  • Parent Academic and Ability Rating Scales are completed if additional insight is necessary to analyze strengths in academics and ability.
  • Current formal norm referenced test data is gathered to determined areas of strength. Examples of formal tests are: ISAT, Woodcock Johnson, PIAT, ITBS, OLSAT and IQ testing instruments..
  • Other data considered are: DWA, DMA, report card grades, end-of-unit tests, and/or assessment portfolios completed in the classroom.
  • Students’ special needs are examined.

To qualify for GT, a student must: 1) rate within the 90%+ range on the Teacher or Parent Academic Rating Scales, 2) score advanced (or 95%tile +) in math or reading on a formal achievement or abilities test or an IQ test.

If any of these qualifications are not met, but additional information would aid in gifted and talented identification, review of the supplementary data will be done on an individual basis.

If you have specific questions, please contact the special education director or your child's school.
